The top post is a clip of a kid screeching into the mic as his ambushed victim escapes. It is pure comedy, 951 points of schadenfreude, and not at all what the day is about. The day is about a single line in the 1.39 patch notes: returning fire no longer dings your anti-behavior matchmaking score. Zero impact. Castle doctrine, as u/VidrA put it.
The post announcing it sits at 768 points and the top comment is u/NimblePasta, who immediately saw the griefing potential:
"Time to jump in front of players when they are fighting Arcs, get damaged... then it's free for all! 😅"
The rest of the thread is split. Half is carebears loading their Rattlers with righteous fury. The other half is veterans asking where this was half a year ago. u/TROSSity117 landed at 355 points with three words and a period: "This would've been sick 6 months ago." It is the kind of comment that sounds ungrateful until you remember ABM was supposed to work like this at launch, and Embark just now got around to it.
The Bear Awakens
The carebear PvE players are not being subtle about the shift. u/NimblePasta posted a clip titled "PvE Carebears Now Fighting Back! 🐻" that shows a Rattler-Burletta combo dismantling would-be predators. The video is shaky, the loot is gray, but the energy is undeniable: these players have been pushed around for months and someone just told them the teacher is looking the other way.
The catch, as u/NimblePasta's own comment suggests, is that the system is now exploitable. Bait a PvE player into hitting you by jumping in their line of fire, and ABM says you are the victim. It is not a loophole - it is the whole premise of the change, and the subreddit has already done the math. u/Rubadub730's confusion is genuine: "Didn't they say this was already implemented months ago?" The answer, from the patch notes themselves, is that it was partially implemented and now it is fully live. The lag between the two states is the thing everyone is side-eyeing.
The Self-Hate Meta
While the carebears were arming up, u/thunderpaws93 posted a wall of text calling the player base entitled and ungrateful. The title is a preemptive surrender: "Fine, I'll say it, and be cleansed in a deluge of downvotes." The post sits at 536 points with a 0.69 ratio, meaning it is both upvoted and debated. The comments are a gallery of self-awareness. u/SpaceGerbil:
"Time played: 2,411 hours. Rating: 1/10. Comments: This is the worst game ever."
u/D-Ursuul dragged Destiny into it: "nobody hates a game more than the subreddit for that game." The whole thread feels like a group therapy session where everyone agrees the patient is toxic but also that the patient is, statistically, still playing. u/Heshkelgaii's reply: "I don't have time to read all of this, I've gotta go to work in like 6 hours."
The Tease
u/ultimateOG logged in post-patch and spotted something: a new entry for "Phantom Targets" in the store rotation or a menu, no one is quite sure, but the screenshot is already at 168 points. The subreddit's working theory is invisible ARC. u/SEN_Doom pre-hated it: "That's gonna be annoying." u/Bagel-luigi's version is better: "They will do no damage. They will not move. They will just be there. And we can't see them." If the invisible ARC are just atmosphere, that is actually a fantastic addition to the Rust Belt paranoia. If they are combatants, the subreddit's monday-morning patch thread is already written.
The day's mood is warm. Not celebratory - the ABM change is a fix, not a feature, and the player base knows it. But the carebear videos are genuine, the self-hate thread is at least honest, and the phantom tease suggests October might bring more than recycled cosmetics. u/LefkadaVice, responding to the 60-year-old raider who finally returned fire: "I hope everyone adopts this mindset. It will make the game even more fun." That is the real 1.39 patch note, and it did not come from Embark.
