Embark posted a development update this afternoon laying out a new release rhythm: two major updates a year instead of the monthly drip. The post is the most-commented thing on the subreddit by a wide margin, and the responses do not line up the way you would expect.
The loudest defenders are the people who were complaining last week. "Really, ARC has never had a major update yet," u/Pacyfnativ wrote in the crosspost thread, arguing that a few months of silence in exchange for something that actually moves the game is the trade they wanted all along. The defense of the change runs through almost every high-scoring reply: $40 game, content since launch has been generous, twice a year is fine if twice a year is real. The line that keeps surfacing is some version of u/Artistic-Ad4523's read: "The community shit on the smaller frequent updates and now we're gonna get 2 per year yippee." Said with a smirk, but the smirk is doing a lot of work.
The quiet part is in a different thread. u/6PEEPERKEEPER9 asked whether anyone else lost motivation after the expedition and got 566 comments and a 0.75 ratio. People are split on whether they're done for now or done done, but they're not arguing about the question. The top reply is from u/green_smell3000 and it is the saddest thing on the subreddit today: "every candle burns out eventually, and that's okay." That is the part of the announcement Embark did not address. If the new cadence means a real lull between drops, the expedition has to carry players through it, and a non-trivial slice of the front page is saying it didn't.
The sweetener buried in the dev post is the Expedition Vault, a new trader that lets you carry five blueprints or items across a reset. u/MoreScarsThanSkin's was the first place most people heard about it, and the comments are the most uncomplicated positivity of the day. It is a small thing that fixes a real complaint and it arrives next week. It also reads, in this context, like an apology for the third expedition more than a preview of the new schedule.
